Many people who start a small business do so because they have a desire to “be their own boss” and be in charge of the business. The problem, however, is that it is often difficult for such people to hand some of their authority over to others when it is necessary. But those who do not learn to delegate are never able to reach their full potential, and their business is never able to achieve maximum success.

Having people underneath you to whom you can comfortably delegate tasks is one of the first keys of successful delegation of tasks. It is sometimes tempting to hire people simply because you need people, but it is much better to wait, as so much starts with the hiring process. Take your time throughout the interview and hiring process, and you will be able to make sure the people you are hiring will be able to grow within your business, and will be able to take on tasks.

You also need to divide up tasks into categories, remaining as organized as possible in the manner in which you delegate. This will enable you to delegate tasks properly, as you will know which employees are right for taking on tasks in each category.

Another big part of delegating tasks is accountability, as you will need to be certain that the tasks you are assigning are being properly taken care of. Early on, you will be the person to whom your employees are accountable, and as our business grows you can add others underneath you to whom your employees can be accountable.
